A path of chronic stress led Adam to a path of chronic misery.

"I was under so much stress from work that I experienced daily physical pain in my chest.
 

I had very little motivation for anything related to work and for my hobbies. I felt like my life was losing purpose. It really was misery. It wasn't a life you would want to have.

 

I didn't feel like I had it under control & didn't understand why these things were happening. It felt hopeless, like I didn’t have an alternative.

 

Ironically, this was also the life I always thought I wanted, but it was a continuous cycle of pain.
 

I tried to see a physiotherapist for special pressure massages. It would always help a little bit after the session, and then another stress came and the pain started all over again."

Relationship hardship only made Adam’s world harder to navigate.

"In parallel to the burnout, I was going through hardship in a relationship I had back then.

In hindsight, my relationship problems made the stress & frustration I felt at work even more pronounced. "

The risk of not getting the support he needed.

“If I hadn't sought support, it would have been a downward spiral until I literally wouldn’t be  physically capable of working. I realistically could’ve seen a loss of income for up to a year.


The people I know who went through burnout physically couldn’t work for half a year, or a year. It was very difficult for them to come back from burnout.
 

There probably would also be a lot of pain, even a lot of frustration from the fact that I'm out of work. I can imagine myself not feeling motivated to work because of the burnout, but I’d probably feel a pressure to try to work & start to feel bad again."

Turns out the fear of being seen as weak is nothing but an illusion.

"I didn’t want to be seen as weak by my colleagues if I wasn’t working late. That’s what was stopping me from solving this on my own.

 

I was so concerned with what people are going to think & say about me. It was sort of a peer pressure but it was also an irrational belief.

 

In fact, the complete opposite happened when I finally told my boss & colleagues (with Burnout Heroes’ support) that I was experiencing burnout symptoms.

 

People actually liked that I was genuine & admitting that I was overworking and had to take a break and reshuffle the way I was approaching work.
